world
i am an infuriated young man. the things that are happening in our world today are really quite appalling. sure, many appalling things have happened in our appalling history, but the media and the ease with which one can find out about all these appalling things, makes it all seem so much more appalling.
i really am frustrated. i feel powerless, sitting here by this crusty computer in middlemore hospital, twiddling my thumbs and playing with my two dollar coin (what should, or rather, what could i buy with this?), to change anything.
whales are being killed in primitive ways on industrial scales. all behind this bull$hit veil of "science". pandas are caged and made to dance, and people smile their fake smiles and pop coins into tin cans, without noticing that the panda is on the verge of death, emaciated and without any free spark in its eye. it's interesting how condoms are still considered 'bad' and to be discouraged by a large proportion of people (and a small proportion of significant people supposedly leading this large proportion of people) - and these people preach in their high and mighty overtones while millions of people are getting infected with HIV, mostly unnecessarily. what do they tell the millions of HIV orphaned children in africa - go to a religious building of worship, and pray, and everything will be ok? george bush speaks in ridiculous english about not wanting to give money to corrupt african leaders, but is quite quiet about the massive arms trades the united states has with both african governments as well as the militia they are battling against. why was iraq such a huge issue? is zimbabwe not such a high priority, since it doesn't have that much oil to be scored as profit? and what about all the other countries with huge strife and political turmoil, which may not have that much 'financial reward' for any interested parties? yep - no one hears about them, and no one really goes in to help them, or cares to. and the attacks in london are just a little sight of the huge iceberg that floats in our bloody sea. how can all these people honestly be running around screaming and chanting about revenge and justice, with absolutely no regard for life whatsoever? do they actually believe that by doing these pointless acts that they will really change anything in the long run? do they actually think that by blowing themselves up and by blowing up innocent civilians, that civilisation as we know it in the western world will suddenly just collapse and that their twisted desires for a New World will actually come true? how can people be brainwashed to such degrees, that they give their lives up, and take so much life with them, in what really is a hopeless cause? it's something that scares me to the bones, makes me shiver in bed - because as soon as people do not value life any more, especially their own life, then that leaves all of hell's spawn at their fingertips. and when this is combined with the narrowmindedness that often accompanies social, religious, cultural and ideological isolation, and the belief that one's particular beliefs are correct and that none of the other millions of beliefs that people have had over the millennia are correct - this leads to a truly scary situation.
needless to say that i am enraged, as i sit here with my two dollar coin. there is such insanity around us. perhaps there will always be. it seems so ridiculous, so pointless. we crusade around parading our flags as if we are gods on earth, yet at most we are only a few bobbing heads in a bloody sea. ok, so maybe that is our lot, as humans - flawed, emotionally labile, irrational, essentially screwed up organisms that have egos far bigger than they should be - but what about the whales, the dolphins, the corals, the pandas, the tigers - why do they have to be part of our gory mess?
i wish someone could tell me how i can make a big difference, make a change for the better. does anyone have any suggestions? i think it important that we should warn our kids of the dangers of the narrow mind. we should cultivate open minds, one at a time. perhaps slowly, things may change.
